To be considered for publication, submissions should follow these general guidelines: 

The Northern Virginia Review considers previously unpublished short fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, photography, and artwork from faculty and staff of Northern Virginia Community College and the Mid-Atlantic Region. We welcome all work that comes from the heart and speaks to our common humanity. We recommend viewing previous samples of published prose, poetry, and visual art in our current and past issues.

To be considered for publication, please follow these guidelines: 

  • You must be a former or current resident of the Mid-Atlantic region
  • Submissions are limited to two prose works, three pieces of art, and five poems. The total number of submissions from one person may not exceed five items in any mix of the above categories. 
  • When submitting more than one work in the same genre, PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT THEM AS SEPARATE SUBMISSIONS. Poems may be uploaded all in one file, prose and artwork as separate files attached to a single submission. 
  • Attach each written submission as a Word document, double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman. Poetry can be single spaced. Fiction and non-fiction pieces should not exceed 6000-6500 words in length. Please do not include your name on the work itself. We read all of our submitted work blind.
  • In the Cover Letter box, pleasee include a 2-4 sentence third-person bio not exceeding 100 words, along with address, phone number, and email address. 

Submissions restricted to NOVA Faculty and Staff

In a time of social distancing, stay-at-home orders, and self-quarantine, stay connected with your NOVA family by sharing your COVID-19 inspired Poetry, Fiction, Creative non-fiction, Art, and Photography.  Accepted submissions will be published on NOVA’s Pandemic Sightings page. 

  • The number of works from one person is limited to two essays, two works of fiction, three pieces of art, and five poems. The total number of works from one person may not exceed five in any mix of the above categories.
  • All work should be submitted electronically through our submission manager. When submitting more than one work in the same genre, PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT THEM AS SEPARATE SUBMISSIONS. Poems may be uploaded all in one file, prose and artwork as separate files attached to a single submission.
